Investment thesis

Counteract is the first venture capital fund solely committed to carbon dioxide removal (CDR), backing early-stage founders across the full spectrum of carbon removal pathways — from direct air capture, mineralisation, and biomass carbon storage to forestry, regenerative agriculture, and ocean-based solutions. Its inaugural fund, Counteract One (targeting £35m / ~$42m), aims to catalyse 5 gigatonnes of CO2e removal by 2050 by investing in pre-seed and seed stage companies globally, each with the potential to plausibly remove or enable 500 million tonnes of CO2e by mid-century. Counteracts four investment criteria are: catalytic potential for planetary-scale systems change; diversity of solutions additive to the CDR ecosystem; self-sustaining business models that scale with accelerating demand; and responsible, regenerative pathways that prize co-environmental and social benefits. Performance carry for the team is directly linked to the fund's overall CO2e removal impact, not just financial returns. The fund does not invest in project development, later-stage companies, or decarbonisation efforts outside greenhouse gas removal.

Notable quotes

It might sound like we have a very narrow investment focus because we only invest in carbon removal within climate investing; so we're a specialist fund within a specialism. But at the same time, we're also broad in that we invest in all carbon removal pathways.

The way that we think about it is not just on the impact of the individual company, but also the potential for that particular company and pathway to catalyze broader action. That's also why a portfolio approach makes a lot of sense.

Matt Isaacs · Business Insider, February 2023 · 2023-02-15

Launching our first fund gives us extra leverage to scale up Carbon Removal efforts, supporting early-stage ventures and working with a truly inspiring ecosystem of partners to identify the right pathways for growth in this vital sector.
