Investment thesis

MassCEC's 2030 Fund is a $50 million commitment to make direct equity and debt investments in Massachusetts-based early-stage climatetech companies through 2030. The fund targets "tough technologies and underserved sectors" across seven verticals—energy, industry and manufacturing, transportation, buildings, agriculture/food/nature, carbon management, and adaptation and resilience—with the goal of advancing climate solutions, filling funding gaps, creating green jobs, and leveraging private capital for the Commonwealth. As a publicly-funded, state economic development agency, MassCEC acts as a "strategic, value-add investor" that can deploy patient, countercyclical capital without the artificial pressures of a traditional fund lifetime, taking board or observer seats and supporting portfolio companies through grants, workforce development, and its extensive corporate and government network.

Notable quotes

MassCEC has a stellar track record of identifying promising climate tech companies. Clean Energy Venture Group and Clean Energy Ventures have joined with MassCEC in co-investing and supporting Massachusetts start-ups, catalyzing economic development and climate impact, and we look forward to continuing this collaboration in the future.

MassCEC stepped up to ensure our success in 2020 when the rest of the market had pulled back. They recognized the importance of our model before most others did, and their well-timed support was crucial to getting us where we are today.

Mike O'Kronley · MassCEC 2030 Investment Deck (masscec.com)

MassCEC excels at investing impactfully and can invest countercyclically in climate technology – their investment is a signal to the ecosystem. MassCEC is at the forefront of emerging technology, I pay attention to where they are investing.
