Roche Venture Fund is the corporate venture arm of Roche, a global leader in medicines and in vitro diagnostics. Its mission is to invest in and develop commercially successful innovative life science companies across pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and digital health, generating financial returns for Roche while fostering transformative innovation. The fund is self-contained with a mandate for independent decision-making, taking a proactive and long-term engagement approach. It focuses primarily on Series A investments in private companies with innovative medicines, diagnostics, and technologies — including preclinical therapeutics and diagnostics approaching launch — and will co-invest alongside Roche or Genentech R&D collaborations in select cases. Initial investments are typically CHF 3–10 million targeting ~15% ownership, with follow-on reserves available from its CHF 750 million evergreen balance-sheet fund.
Notable quotes
“It is an honour to succeed Carole Nuechterlein – my former boss who taught me the ropes when I started out in venture capital. For over 20 years, Carole has successfully steered the fund through bull and bear markets with investments and exits in more than 60 companies, leading to today's well-established 750-million-CHF fund.”
“A VC wants to invest in a startup that's innovative and differentiated but also addresses a commercial need. You need to prove that your startup will be a success in the long run by, in a best-case scenario, showing a target product profile.”
“Joining the investor world with the Roche Venture Fund was a highlight as it gave me the ability of supporting great people and ideas in order to create successful companies and therapies for patients — making use of the huge Roche network and learning about finance, strategy and early-stage investment.”
