Scottish Enterprise's Growth Investment Team (formerly Scottish Investment Bank) is the investment arm of Scotland's national economic development agency. Its mission is to ensure that businesses with growth and export potential have adequate access to growth capital, addressing equity gaps for high-growth Scottish SMEs from start-up through to expansion stage. Operating a suite of co-investment funds — the Scottish Co-Investment Fund and the Scottish Venture Fund — it invests alongside accredited private sector partners (angels, syndicates, VC groups and corporates), typically providing £100,000 to £2 million as part of total deal sizes ranging from £200,000 to £10 million, on equal commercial terms. Scottish Enterprise acts as a 'gap' funder, requiring companies to first maximise private sector investment before applying. Its approach is sector-agnostic but prioritises globally ambitious, innovative companies — particularly in energy transition, life sciences, industrial biotech, fintech, space, and deep tech — that can deliver economic benefit to Scotland. Between January 2016 and June 2023, the team supported 177 Scottish companies across 282 fundraising rounds, investing £389 million and leveraging over £2 billion in private sector capital over 20 years.
Notable quotes
“Tidal energy is one of Scotland's most exciting opportunities, and Orbital Marine Power is driving the sector forward with world-leading technology. We're proud to back the business with further investment and are delighted to welcome new investment from PXN Ventures, one of Scottish Enterprise's long-standing co-investment partners.”
“We are delighted to support the continued development of IGS as it looks to take its technology to the global marketplace. The company has been account managed by Scottish Enterprise since 2014 and has received both financial and non-financial assistance covering innovation and R&D as well as supply chain management and international market entry.”
“A company like IGS securing three international investors in Ospraie, S2G and AgFunder goes a long way to highlight the strength of opportunities available for investors outside Scotland looking to invest in innovative Scottish companies.”
