4490 Ventures is a high-conviction, high-concentration early-stage investor focused on companies outside of Silicon Valley. The firm believes future market leaders will look less like purpose-built software applications and more like proprietary data, analytics, or hardware-enabled companies using software as a delivery mechanism — what they call 'Connected Software.' They invest in web3-enabled enterprise software companies that disrupt legacy industries and have the potential to reach billion-dollar market capitalizations. The firm prefers to invest as the first institutional capital in a company, typically in rounds where $6M–$10M is raised, investing up to $10M over multiple rounds per portfolio company. 4490 deliberately deploys capital outside Silicon Valley, believing there are outsized opportunities in the Midwest due to abundant domain expertise, Fortune 500 proximity, and relatively limited venture capital — enabling greater capital efficiency and impact.
Notable quotes
“We're in the Midwest for a reason, because we believe that there's outsized opportunities here, based off of lots of talented people, lots of Fortune 500 companies, lots of domain experts, and, relatively speaking, limited capital. We look at software, or what we consider connected software, which is software that's connected to a proprietary data pool or proprietary piece of hardware, that can go and build a solution that will disrupt these big legacy industries.”
“It is a pleasure to witness QualSights' unprecedented approach and growth in the field of consumer insights. QualSights' team has created a suite of technologies that address a major gap in consumer behavior understanding. These advances will allow brands to get access to data they've never had before and truly understand how everyday people use products post-purchase. It is a brilliant, globally scalable and defensible innovation.”
“I spent the bulk of my venture career on the west coast in Silicon Valley, and my partner Dan spent the bulk of his investment career out in New York. Now we've come together to build 4490 off our learnings from the last 20 years of seeing what works on the coasts and we're trying to apply it to the underserved market of the middle part of America.”
